About King Cruiser, Shark Point and Koh Doc Mai

The King Cruiser Wreck

It is the largest wreck around Phuket, this 85m long ferry that made the Phuket-PhiPhi link sank in 1997 after hitting the “Anemone Reef” reef. There were about a hundred passengers aboard, all surviving.

The top of the wreck is 20m and the bottom is 32m, this site only accessible with a Level 2, PADI Advanced open water or other. The wreck is in bad condition, penetrations are no longer allowed because considered too dangerous. Highly exposed the site offers conditions that can be a bit difficult with average current and reduced visibility to 8m. This does not prevent that site to be extraordinary with a very dense marine life, myriads of fish populate the wreck and soft corals covers a good part of the wreck offering surprising colors.

Shark Point

It takes its name from the fact that there were many zebra sharks here (also called leopard for its adult color) who find daytime rest on the sandy bottom, sheltered currents behind one of the reefs. Unfortunately the weather has made sharks come less and less and especially the population has decreased considerably. It remains a superb reef and a very rich marine life. The site consists of 3 pinnacles, we usually stay on the first two during our dives. Here soft corals, giant sea fan, sponges offers beautiful colors. This open sea site between Phuket and Phiphi is home to many fish that find protection. there may be low visibility (8m) and current. A minimum of 15 dive experience is recommended.

This destination is the most popular, and certainly offers the most beautiful dives when conditions are good.

Koh Doc Mai

In Thai language the name means “the flower island”, this beautiful limestone island diving vertically into the water offers a dive on a wall. The site is very discussed among the divers, some love it (me for example), the other hates it … I think you have to know what to look for here, but Macro lovers will be happy to find all kinds of small creatures hide in the cracks. Also two small cellars can be explored at 13m and 18m.
